WHY COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP NOW?

New Radnor, or Maesyfyd, is the former County Town of Radnorshire, set to the western side of the Radnor Basin, at the foot of the Radnor Forest. It is a medieval town laid out on a grid format. It is a wonderful place to visit and has a supportive, vibrant community. The village has a well stocked village shop, a picture framer, a community centre, a beautiful church, and a community hub.

However, it has not had a pub in the village for 8 years, since the closure of the Radnor Arms. Although there are many hotels and pubs in the UK called the Radnor Arms, The Radnor Arms, New Radnor is the only one that is actually in the village which bears its name.   Despite being a viable business, and valuable community asset it ceased trading in 2016 and has deteriorated over that time. In 2019 following damage to a neighbouring property,  and the transfer of temporary ownership to the neighbours, the pub was sold to pay for costs incurred by them. The pub was  bought at auction by an interim owner as the Radnor Arms Action Group did not have the funds to purchase the pub.  After much campaigning since the closure, the pub had been saved for the Community.

The Radnor Arms Hotel Limited Community Benefit Society are working towards re-opening  the building as a thriving welcoming public house and community space for the current and future generations. Much of the existing building needs repair, including works to the roof, windows, and total interior refit. The pub can be re-opened with the support of our local and wider community, local businesses and trades people.  The Management Committee have adopted the Plunkett Model Rules for our Community Benefit Society. A copy of the rules can be downloaded here and a brief video guide to the essentials can be watched here.

We look forward to the community, opening the pubs doors again and extending a very warm welcome to everyone.
